http://victory1945.rt.com RT presents War Witness - a special project dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany. World War II veterans and survivors recount their stories about the war - from how it began to how it ended. Henri Schaub is a Frenchman from Alsace, a French province annexed by Germany in 1940. He was forcibly drafted into the German army. People like him were labelled 'malgré-nous', which means 'in spite of our will'. Schaub deserted the same day he arrived on the Eastern Front. He became a Soviet PoW, and made a long journey from Russia to the Middle East and Europe to join Allied forces fighting the Germans until the end of the war.
