I have come up with 7 reasons you may be hitting other strings when you play the violin and why you keep getting a scratching sound.
These are my thoughts and ideas to try and trouble shoot the problem and help you all a little.

Here is a link to Lesson 5 from my '10 Violin Lesson Videos' http://youtu.be/ehIVE-JplZA as it demonstrates and teaches you how to play the open strings which might help with this video.
Good luck.

Thank you thank you. Thank you for being my tutor. For free. I can't really communicate how much I appreciate your being here on this platform.

i can't believe you pay so much! i pay 20 pounds per hour

$100 an hour or more in the SF Bay area yeah. Online for free? Yeah. I mean, the basics have been free for ages if you know where to look. Yehudi Menuhin did a how-to on BBC public TV in England, and you can find it online, and there's a book by him about it too.

I think the next tutorial you should do is ways to not give up learning violin. Dang! These scratchy noises and hitting other strings makes me wanna throw away my violin and just give up learning. I'm a guitarist since the age of 6, so even the proper grip of the violin frustrates me a lot.

Dani Cruz ... Be patient with violin... It takes much more practice to make progress on violin than with most other instruments
EpilepsyIsDancing81
Dani Cruz Girl I know what you mean. It makes me want to quit too... but I just keep getting insight on how to fix it and have a listen to my favorite violinists, like Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lindsey Stirling and remember that at one time they sounded scratchy and squeaky too. ❤

I am 56 years old and have just began to learn to play the violin and when doing a search I came upon your Tutorials. I am so glad I did. Your Violin Tutorials are wonderful. I still sound like I have a cat by the tail with a pair of pliers, but with LOTS of practice, I know I can do this. Thank you so much for the wonderful videos.

That is wonderful Deb. I am so glad that you decided to do something for yourself and picked up the violin. Believe me, there will be times when you find it tough, but hang in there and enjoy the journey even with all the frustrations it is well worth it. Btw there is a great group on face book called Adult Starters - Violin/Fiddle is a wonderful group. if I have any questions they are always glad to help. Good Luck Deb with your lessons and I wish you all the very best in your Violin Journey.

Great to hear that! I'm 36 and have been playing violin for 1 week! I refuse to spend one more day of my life saying "I wish I could play an instrument properly"!! I hope you are enjoying it as much as I am. I love these tutorials too....... thanks Alison

thank you very much for your free lessons and tips , i love your style of teaching . im still rubbish and i squeak and scratch a lot , plus i am playing a really cheap violin , but your uploads have really helped , thanks for taking the time to make these.
Vincent Medina
jason jones I think I saw you on a Gaelynn Lea video. Which is the whole reason I'm picking up the violin :)

Hi I got a violin a few days ago an I've played violin before and I forgot everything thanks to you I can relearn everything in no time.

Suggestion to my fellow learners out there: I find recording yourself is an invaluable tool. When you play back, you can observe what you are REALLY doing, rather than what you THINK you are doing. It is a great diagnostic tool. Just don't beat yourself up. Look for the positive as well as the negative. Alison, thank you for all your good advice. I just completed lesson 10 and am busy practing Gypsy Firelight :-)
Anna Santiago
thanks for the advice :D i found out i got a lot of errors to fix because of this and i got to fix them :3

This is now my official 'go to' teacher for violin lessons!  Great job! I took violin lessons for a couple of years when I was 8-9 years old.  One thing lead to another, & I've been playing guitar for 37+ years.  I've done pretty well on it, but I've always wanted to return to my "first love", the violin.  It's a VERY different instrument in comparison, and in my opinion, even more expressive as a musical instrument!  After my initial shock of picking up a violin after close to 40 years & sounding HORRIBLE, I've been motivated to put in a bit more practice & I've gotten a little bit better. Your thorough, detailed, helpful videos have motivated me to delve even further to strive to an intermediate violin level, if possible.  I don't know that I'll ever get as good on violin as I am on the guitar, but if I can even get remotely close, I'll be one happy cat!  I'm sure that I will attribute much of this to your videos!  I'll be sure to share some of these to my other musician friends on Facebook, & spread the good word! For what it's worth, THANK YOU!

This video clarified a lot of things for me. Thank you so much. You probably have seen other comments of mine on other videos and I don't mean to be a repetitive bore, but goodness, you are pretty beyond words.
