On a hot day last summer, Will Bayha was training with his ski team at Waterville Valley. He felt like he needed a break from the trampoline and sat down. Suddenly he slumped over, unconscious. Will, only 14 years of age, had gone into cardiac arrest. His coach, Wes Preston, quickly attended to him and found that he did not have a pulse. He immediately started CPR and instructed others to get help. Staff members Peter Stokloza, Tim McLaughlin and Teese Mosenthal quickly jumped in and took turns administering CPR.

Patroller Vivian Aristegui arrived on the scene with her Ski Patrol backpack, which contained an AED and an oxygen tank. With one shock from the AED, Will's heart started beating on its own and he soon regained consciousness. The first responders arrived and Will was transported by helicopter to Dartmouth-Hitchcock.

The requirement that the WVBBTS staff be trained in CPR, combined with the availability of the on-site AED, really paid off. It was truly a team effort that made the difference in a situation where every second was a matter of life or death. Will is thrilled to be back on his skis this winter, forever grateful for the actions of all who came to his aid that day.
