This Nokia virtual-reality camera costs $60,000
Good VR doesn't come cheap, as evidenced by Nokia's Ozo 360-degree video camera.
Nokia this week formally debuted its OZO professional VR camera, with features like real-time preview, wireless operation, and full 3D 360 audio and video broadcasting.
"We're at the dawn of an exciting new medium that will transform the way people connect to stories, events, and the world around them," Nokia President Ramzi Haidamus said in a statement.
Initially teased in late July, the somewhat spherical device (a long handle protrudes from the back) was designed and built for professional content creators, and comes with the price tag to prove it.
The $60,000 camera captures stereoscopic 3D video and spacial audio through eight synchronized shutter sensors and integrated microphones.
Users then import their footage into the OZO software for real-time 3D viewing; content can be published for VR-viewing hardware like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive VR, Samsung Gear VR, Sony PlayStation VR, and Microsoft HoloLens.
"OZO is a powerful tool designed for the professional creators who will answer the most exciting and intriguing questions about the possibilities for virtual reality," Haidamus said.
The VR camera is just the first in Nokia's planned portfolio of digital media solutions, though the company did not expand on what to expect next.
During Monday's official launch event in California, attendees watched a live performance by the band Best Coast, recorded with the OZO and broadcast in full 3D 360 VR from the roof of the Capital Records tower to downtown Los Angeles.
Nokia began drumming up excitement for the new camera over the summer, when it launched the "Look around you" creative contest, asking people to submit concepts for "amazing and immersive VR short films."
