A reading of Jude Weirmeir's Subscription Opus Issue 3 by students at Chapman University. Since January 2011 Weirmeir has been sending monthly mail-art sheet music that includes visual, tactile or other sensory components that are indistinct from the music. Having no formal training in visual art but highly trained in avant-garde music, the combination of specialist and amateur provides a interplay that blurs the boundaries between sight and sound, craft and chance, expert and brute, serious and joke. Weirmeir strives to remove ideas, opinions and dogma from the creative act. The impossibility of excluding oneself from the artistic process places the artist in flux, unsettled and uncertain in a perpetual state of rejection and renewal. For Weirmeir, this approach removes art situated in distinct categories favoring instead a playful nihilism that incites new areas of discovery, an intermedia.
