Finally decided to upload a video after beating this 2 months ago. Recorded with FRAPS with all high settings, no anti aliasing, and resolution of 1600x900.

First things first, Far Cry 2 has virtually nothing to do with the original Far Cry (which was an amazing game by the way and still is). Even the new custom engine created by Ubisoft, Dunia, uses only a small percentage of the original CryEngine. But I'm assuming that by using the popular Far Cry franchise, Ubisoft created a lot of hype for the multiplatform game.

I was so happy to be able to run Far Cry 2 with all high settings (there's very high and ultra high). With Crysis, I could not play at my native resolution with high settings, and medium (shader) settings just does NOT cut it! So I'm glad that there's a similar less demanding game. Far Cry 2 is just as beautiful, if not more, although Crysis does seem much more detailed and photorealistic at times.

Story wise, Far Cry 2 gets a 1/10. The war torn African setting is realistic, but nothing ever makes you feel a part of the action. Hunting down and killing the Jackal is your motivation and true mission, but there is no escalation to that point and no explanation about his character, save for stupid cassette tapes that the player finds. Hell, the ending is probably the stupidest ending you'll ever encounter. Go read about it on Wikipedia or find it on YouTube. Frankly, it's not worth playing to find out.

However, just playing the game is pure fun. Even in the beginning with few unlocked weapons, the player is able to blow stuff up and kill as many mercenaries as one wishes. Then again, respawning enemies at guard posts and random enemy chases (where they somehow always catch up to you no matter what car they use) do get annoying.

There were a few things that really irked me in the game. One, the mouse movement sucks. It is much "slower" than in other PC games. Two, widescreen resolutions were originally vert-, not the ideal and expected hor+. Fortunately, the latter has been fixed in a recent patch (1.02, which is what I'm playing in the video).

Overall, Far Cry 2 is a good game that doesn't deserve the Far Cry emblem, but Ubisoft has certainly outdone themselves with the Dunia engine. I look forward to what they or the community can do with it.
