With the Oculus Rift, Second Life is more compelling than ever! Your view is no longer boxed-in on a screen. With a combination of a wide field-of-view with head-tracking and stereoscopic 3D, panoramic vistas completely surround you in a truly immersive virtual reality.
Linden Lab has integrated the Oculus Rift into the Second Life Viewer to make it easy to enjoy the fully immersive experience as you explore the vast virtual world.
Ready to try it out?
Just download the new Second Life Viewer, plug in your Oculus Rift and the Viewer automatically detects your new hardware and calibrates the display when you log in.
Then, in the Me menu toggle to Toggle HMD Mode — that stands for Head Mounted Display.
We're still in 3rd-person "Object View". Notice how the user interface — UI for short — is showing. From here, tap the "M" key once to enter the classic Mouselook mode for no-UI immersion. Only now, your head and mouse both control where you look, so be careful when touching your mouse or you may get dizzy.
If you tap the "M" key again, you enter the NEW "First Person View", which is Rift-optimized and shows the UI, so you can use the mouse independently of where you look.
You can customize the UI further at any time to find what settings work best for you.
If you want to move in the same direction that you're looking, tap the "Q" key to "align to look".
You can also activate these views from the Camera controls.
Once you're up-and-running with the Rift, it's time to explore! You can use the Oculus Rift anywhere in Second Life and we've rounded up a handful of spots that are particularly impressive. Check them out in the special Oculus Rift Destination Guide found at http://www.secondlife.com/destinations.
That's it! With the Oculus Rift, you'll soon experience Second Life in a whole new yet natural way.
