What is ALLen Reads?

ALLen Reads is our community's "one book" project. The goal is for the entire community to read the same book and then come together to discuss it and enjoy related activities.

WHAT BOOK ARE WE READING?

The book chosen for the 2007-08 ALLen Reads is Marley & Me written by John Grogan, a story about a family and their life with "the worst dog in the world." It will make you laugh and cry; it's a book that will interest people of all ages; and you don't even have to have a pet to be able to appreciate the story.

"Marley books" -- IS THERE MORE THAN ONE?

The fact that the author has taken the adult book and rewritten it in two other versions -- Marley, A Dog Like No Other (for ages 9-14) and Bad Dog, Marley! (picture book) -- makes it ideal for our "one book" choice. This way the whole family can read and discuss the story! We have purchased copies for all the school libraries to get the kids reading, too. We hope families will read aloud and also read separately together!!

WHERE CAN I GET THE BOOK?

The book is available in the Allen Public Library and at all book stores. Borders Express in Collin Creek Mall has allowed us to offer coupons to Allen readers for 20% off all the Marley books -- you can pick one up at the library.

WHEN SHOULD I READ IT? WHEN DO WE DISCUSS IT?

Between October and January, we hope everyone will read the book. Then in February, we will send discussion leaders to groups that request one; and related activities will start at the library, including a visit from the picture book illustrator; a talk by the audio book narrator; and lessons from a local 'dog whisperer." More details on those to come.
