We decided to make this big. We knew that sharing amongst ourselves would be a great exercise but we wanted to branch out even further, to take it to the streets and get responses from Boston! So that's what we did. We crafted a larger than life chalkboard that we could fill up with responses from anyone who wanted to participate. A social experiment was formed.
Our main goal was to put smiles on people's faces that day. As people gave answers to both questions that we wrote on each side of the board: What got you through 2016? and What do you hope for in 2017?
For 2016, a wide variety of answers were given: faith, family, certain hobbies and interests, alcohol and even- a plant that is now legal in the state of Massachusetts.
As for 2017, a lot of people hope for more love to go around, for wars to end and for certain individuals' dreams to come true. Even though there was a multitude of different languages, Bostonians and non-Bostonians alike seem to hope for a better year overall.
The responses we received were amazing. It didn't take more than a minute after setting up the board in Faneuil Hall - Quincy Market for someone to walk up and ask to participate. As one person wrote, others would watch the response and pick up a piece of chalk to write their own. It continued like that for hours. The board was completely filled and we had to take away the chalk because there was no more room to write.
What does Boston mean to you? To us it means people: people of all colors, lifestyles, backgrounds, social status, and all the stories they come with. People are what makes Boston great. That's why IM Boston is striving to discover various stories from Boston people. We want to hear your stories of life, love, adversity, triumph, adventure, sorrow, family, and pride. You are what make Boston great. Let's hear your stories. Lift up your voice.
