At the Woodstock Fruit Festival 2013, I had the chance to ask durianrider and freelee from 30 bananas a day about the notion that sugar rots teeth and if it is really true.

Recently, durianrider has been adding refined sugar to his smoothies and cereals which has worried a lot of people about teeth problems, as well as other potential risks. He thinks that sugar does NOT rot the teeth. He says the worst case scenario for teeth and dental issues is bad dental hygiene and bad genetics. Adding refined organic cane sugar or coconut sugar (or any form of refined sugar) to your smoothies is the same thing as fruit sugar.

What seems to be more of a problem are high protein diets can lead to teeth problems since they tend to be high in acid, which it extracts the calcium from the bones and teeth. Animal products ESPECIALLY promote the growth of bacteria which are known to destroy teeth.

For healthy teeth and dental hygiene, it is important not to ever let your mouth get dry, that way the saliva can maintain that alkaline level and not become acidic and promote the growth of bad bacteria and other harmful hazards to the teeth. If your mouth becomes dry it means you are dehydrated. Make sure your urine is CLEAR to be sure that you are hydrated to prevent teeth problems, as well as many other physiological problems. Flossing and using a soft (vegan) toothbrush at least twice a day (upon rising and before going to bed). Water picks can also be helpful for getting things stuck between your teeth. Natural hygiene suggest only using water but some natural toothpastes or tooth soaps can sometimes help do the trick for keeping your teeth clean.
