Composer's note: The basis of the melody to this piece was composed at the Skibereen Heritage Centre, Ireland. The song was composed mainly outdoors with pen and paper, in the Dandenong Ranges, where I live and where the traditional owners are the Wurundjeri. I was in Ireland thanks to The Tyrone Guthrie Centre, where I was Composer In Residence, and thanks to The Phonograph Performance Company of Australia who awarded me a grant. Thanks to my family, I travelled to the birthplace of my great great grandmother Kate Mahony from Clogh Na Kylte (Clonakilty) who left Ireland bound for Australia around the time of the famine. Having sung the song Skibereen, I thought I would visit the nearby town and Heritage Centre.
