On January 18, 2011 the Newseum hosted a panel discussion on the historic and contemporary relevance of President Dwight D. Eisenhower's famous Farewell Address.
Co-sponsored with the Eisenhower Institute of Gettysburg College and the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, the panel was led by David Gergen of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. Panelists included: James Fallows of The Atlantic; Dana Priest of The Washington Post; and Evan Thomas of Newsweek.
The program aired Eisenhower's original speech in which he warned of the "unwarranted influence" of a "military industrial complex." The speech, delivered on January 17, 1961, was his last before leaving office after serving two terms as president.
