Pratima Joshi, who studied Architecture, went on to start Shelter Associates to provide access to basic infrastructure to the urban poor, after she saw the gap between academia's understanding of slums and ground reality. Hear her story here.

She has worked in the area of sustainable low cost housing and sanitation for the urban poor for over two decades. A much celebrated personality, Pratima has received the Aga Khan Scholarshipin, Ashoka Fellowship for outstanding work as a social entrepreneur, been identified by BBC as a leading slum architect of India, ‘New Asian Hero’ by Strait Times, Singapore, Google Earth Hero Award, ‘Amazing Indian’ by Times Now, is the only Indian architect invited to speak at the 24th World Congress of Architects in Tokyo in 2013, Winner-Google Impact Challenge (Shelter Associates), Winner, HUDCO Award for Best Practices in Sanitation (Shelter Associates in partnership with Pune Municipal Corporation).
