A thrilling game, the 1998 play off final at Wembley. Clive Mendonca scores the first goal to put Charlton in the lead, Niall Quinn makes it 1-1 early in the second half. Then shortly after Kevin Phillips puts Sunderland in the lead, right before Mendonca scores his second. to make it 2-2. Quinn makes it 3-2 to Sunderland, then Richard Rufus scores to make it 3-3 and send the game into extra time. Nicky Summerbee scores to once again restore Sunderlands lead, before Mendonca completes his hat trick to send the game to penalties. Sunderland & Charlton go on to score their spot kicks to send it to sudden death, Michael Gray ended up missing his take and Charlton are promoted to the Premiership.
