From the 'Sky Song' CD available from http://www.sarahhopkins.com
'The Winds of Heaven' for voice in the wires was created by Sarah Hopkins (vocals) & Alan Lamb (wire music).

It was created & recorded in 1986 at the 'Pole Farm Wire Music Installation' in Darwin (Australia).

Sarah writes : "As part of our 'Wire Music Installation' Alan had strung a long wire between two hollow steel abandoned telegraph poles. Soon after, we discovered that these hollow steel poles were good resonators which, when sung into would carry the sound of the voice up into the wires. Alan placed a very sensitive ceramic 'pick-up' microphone on the wire so as to record my voice as I sang into the hollow steel pole. I wore headphones - plugged into the tape recorder - & was therefore able to hear my voice echoing down the long wire. As I sang this improvised song, the wind picked up & I could hear the sound of the wind blowing around the wire plus vibrating the wire like a huge Aeolian Harp. There are no studio effects or multi-tracking..... This piece is an improvisation which was recorded live- outdoors in a field !"

The unique soundscapes created by Sarah Hopkins & Alan Lamb are reflections of the vast Australian landscape. "The first time I heard 'Sky Song' I knew I was having what some people would call a transcendental experience. The music which sounds as if it is coming from the stars, brought tears to my eyes." - Richard Creswick, National Media Liason Service, Darwin, Australia.

Music from the 'Sky Song' CD was featured on Australia's Olympic 2000 bid CD. Tracks include : The Winds of Heaven, Sky Song, Cello Chi, Mirages, Flight of the Wild Goose & New Journey. Instrumentation : cello, vocals, overtone singing, harmonic whirlies, recorded telegraph wires & windchimes.
