The Saajhi Stepping Pump is an affordable, field-serviceable, manual stepping pump for smallholder farmers in rural markets. Saajhi originated from the word Saajhedaari, or Partnership, which is commonly used in India to address a business ally or partner.
Saajhi's design uses nearly 40 percent less water compared with traditional furrow irrigation, enabling farmers to conserve this valuable resource while more effectively delivering it to their crops. The Saajhi Stepping Pump is human powered, requiring no fossil fuels, electrical connections or standing power supply, making it a sustainable, energy-conscious technology. It is capable of more than tripling the revenue of smallholder farmers.
Extensive field visits and interviews with more than 750 farmers across India, Asia, South America, and Africa helped designers create a detailed profile of those who would be most impacted by this technology, and ensure the pump meets their specific needs. The designers also repurposed patented marine pump technology --proven in harsh environments for more than 25 years -- and used corrosion resistant materials to create a low-cost diaphragm-based pump system that is easily serviceable and self-priming.
