You know, when you think about it, despite how badass this ending was and how especially the unedited version of this is the most shocking moment in this cartoon series... its kind of forgoing one key aspect about the joker.  See its been said in the comics by writers and fans, that the joker has no killed batman, because he doesn't want to, because to the joker, he is the most important person to the jokers life, the hero for joker neverending games and plays, and without him the joker would have nothing. Even in one of the earlier batman animated series, when he thought batman had been killed, he had a fake funeral for him in the joker style, because deep down in his psychotic mind, he needs batman.  So why then did the joker just forgo all that here, to have robin kill batman in one final joke.

+MrTaurenshaman I think you're right about Joker, but I also think that all changed when he found out who Batman really was. Joker says as much when he reveals to Batman that he knows. Joker's entire goal was based around a Batman he constructed out of his expectations. The man that turned out to be behind the cowl was in Joker's words "pathetic and not even worth laughing at". Bruce wasn't worthy of Joker's attention , so he just decided to kill him outright.

In the New Batman Adventures you hear him saying that Batmans Death must be a masterpiece. He had just the right one this time. Only his bad luck blew it.
