Ms. Chanelle Porter took part in Mayor Alvin Brown's inaugural program called Learn2Earn. It is a summer program which motivates students for college. Ms. Porter met several mentors in the program, including Education Commissioner Dr. Donnie Horner and Cedric Cruse with the City of Jacksonville.
Around the same time, Ms. Porter learned she was accepted to be one of about 2,000 students enrolled in the High School Presidential Inaugural Conference.
However, due to financial limitations, Ms. Porter's family was unable to pay for the trip, including fees. Ms. Porter's mother contacted the Learn2Earn office and the mayor's office, who then contacted VyStar Credit Union for support. VyStar Credit Union generously came through with a check for $3,550 to sponsor Chanelle.
Mayor Brown said, "For the past 14 months, my administration has worked hard to build new and meaningful partnerships in education. It has been encouraging to see community and business leaders answer an important call to action to help young people succeed. Chanelle's story is another success story. "
