Video showing an iPhone 6+ (in the front) and an iPad Air 2 (in the back) streaming Eurosport HD from a Dreambox 8000 using the Blackbox Pro app. This stream is around 10 mbps and has a low tolerance for network issues, so if an issue occurs the video stream will stop. The router being used is a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 using DD-WRT (SVN revision 26190M, that is one using the new Broadcom ARM driver). Both devices are connected to the 5 GHz WiFi on the router which is running the WiFi network in mixed mode.
As you can see the stream stops on the Air 2 every few seconds to at most 2 minutes. The result can be reproduced any time and with any firmware version, with jailbreak on the device or without, with the network setting s reset or not, with the iPad being newly setup with just the Blackbox app installed or with a fully restored backup with a lot of apps.
The issue on the iPad Air 2 can also be reproduced at any time on a second iPad Air 2 that has a different color and was bought at a different time and in a different place.
The issue cannot be reproduced on an iPhone 5, an iPhone 5s, an iPhone 6, an iPhone 6+ and not on an iPad Air 1 either, all these devices run fine.
I could upload a video of a 5, 5s, 6, 6+, Air 1 and 2 pieces of Air 2 streaming at the same time and reliably the stream would stop on both iPad Air 2s while it would work fine on all other 5 iOS devices at the very same time.
All the things suggested in forums and by Apple have been tried, resetting network, resetting device etc.etc. Also various firmware versions have been tested from 8.1.0 to 8.1.3 and both iPad Air 2 will reliably fail every time.
Now someone could claim the Blackbox app is having an issue on the iPad Air 2, however if that is the case then why would it work if you turn off WMM on the router (which however is not recommended by Apple and has other negative side effects) or forcing the WiFi on the router to A mode (which doesn't support WMM).
I leave any interpretation whether this is an issue with the configuration of an individual iPad or whether this is a serious issue that affects a large number of iPad Air 2 up to you.
