Those brave young souls who fought in the wars of the past would know all too well the difficulty faced with fighting a relentless enemy in a messy, gruelling and demanding environment -- with death faced at nearly every turn, but what many don't seem to realise is that the battlefield of a genuine follower of Christ is already existent. The child of Christ is already deployed, and is fighting the enemy in his own living room, the bedroom, when he is in bed at night, and throughout nearly every moment of every waking day.
Unlike physical warfare where land is the primary goal of occupation, spiritual warfare strives to claim occupation of the heart and mind. The enemy is not just Satan but a third of all angels known to exist (Revelation 12:4) Satan is not the comical red demon with a pitchfork that many seem to envision, but a very dangerous, serious and powerful spirit that if not for God's loving protection, would overwhelm men in a way that would be unimaginable. Satan was originally Lucifer, once the most powerful & wondrous angel of God, and also, one of the two covering cherubs (Ezek. 28:14.) For many reasons, he is the commander of the demonic spirits, and this army is likely as numerous as every occupant existing in this world today. We must not lose sight of the fact that the Holy Spirit can counsel us, guide us -- to strength and wisdom. Guardian angels are also on duty to deal with the physical nature of any attack that may come from demonic foes, thus bringing the playing field down to a spiritual battle. The physical nature of the events faced in the world are also challenges to overcome, but the heart of battle really is in the heart and mind, and if one should overcome in Christ in these areas, they are victorious and have overcome the foes of this lifetime. Faith, hope and love are the keys to strengthening a follower of Christ, and as the Lord's Coming approaches, we must continually wear the armour of God to walk the life for His purpose.
