Music from China: "Songs from the Mountain"
Arranged by Wang Guowei
Filmed Live at Bruno Walter Auditorium
September 15, 2018

Wang Guowei ,erhu
Michael Katz, cello

Liu Tianhua's original composition for solo erhu is inspired by a famous line from Tang dyansty poet Wang Wei: "There seems to be no one on the empty mountain...and yet I think I hear a voice." The music opens with the deep silence of a mountain gorge, which is immediately followed by a lively melody, signifying the intrusion of man. This appears throughout, sometimes alone and other thimes mingling with bird songs.
