All human societies have music with a rhythmic ‘beat’, but the ability to manufacture musical instruments and produce a rhythmic beat has not been seen in other species. This video discusses how drumming by palm cockatoos with a manufactured drumstick shares the key ingredients of human instrumental music, and sheds light on how rhythmic music evolved.
