One of the most anticipated moments of the Super Bowl is, paradoxically, the halftime of the game. It is during these 15 minutes that a huge display takes place to present a show that always gives to speak for many more days. In this occasion, the one in charge of starring it was Lady Gaga and, as it has us accustomed, it surpassed the expectations with a surprising performance.

Lady Gaga began her recital on the roof of the stadium. Up there was nothing but heaven. It was at the top. Suddenly thousands of lights lit up like stars, which soon began to change color and create light shapes. They were drones. 300, to be exact. The image was so impressive that it had an immediate impact on the networks. Everyone commented on the perfection of the show and the memes abounded. After this impressive opening, Lady Gaga went on for more: she threw herself into the void hanging from a harness and literally flew to the stage on the field. Now, why did not his army of colored drones follow in their free fall?

The reason is simple: the drones show was recorded earlier and what was seen in the live broadcast of the show was the result of an excellent editing job. According to the makers of this technology, it was decided to film the introduction of Lady Gaga and the part in which the American flag is formed with the colored lights of the drones, also the part in which the drones form the Pepsi logo To then become the Intel. This decision had to do with the restrictions put by the legislation to fly drones and more still to perform acrobatics with them, on a multitude of people.

How the drone show works

Each drone has the size of a square foot, weighs just over 200 grams and is covered in plastic and foam to protect it from unexpected impacts. They are not as flashy as the drones that are generally on sale because the idea is precisely that nobody notices them. What you should note are the four billion combinations of colors that they are able to create with their LEDs, and the aerial choreographies that they can realize thanks to a meticulous codification that synchronizes them to perfection.

The drones communicate wirelessly with a central computer to perform their choreographic routine and obviously to record the route of the hundreds of machines that are flying around them. The system can be adapted during the flight as well. Before going on stage, the computer checks the battery and the GPS signal is good enough for each drone. If a drone fails during the show, there is a spare unit that is activated to replace it in a matter of seconds.
