The Buffalo Bill Center of the West wants you to know that feeding a bear, either intentionally or unintentionally, is bad for the bear. Bears are very smart and once they begin to realize that they can get food from humans or human dwellings, they become a greater threat to humans. This is called habituation.

When a bear becomes habituated, park officials and scientists feel more obligated to trap and move the bear, and in worst case scenarios they must put that bear down. So when campers, hikers, and visitors are not cautious while in "Bear Country," they not only endanger themselves, they also endanger the the bears.

Bears and people in the Greater Yellowstone Area can avoid conflicts more easily when people follow the guidelines suggested in these videos, and stay "Bear Aware."

To learn more about the wildlife and ecosystems of the Greater Yellowstone Area, visit the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming, on your way to or from Yellowstone National Park's East Gate. We have a whole museum dedicated to the Yellowstone Area natural history called the Draper Natural History Museum.
