Burlington, Vermont is one of the best examples in the Northeastern United States of successful urban planning and downtown redevelopment.
In the late 1970s and the early 1980s, under Mayors Gordon Paquette and Bernie Sanders, the city underwent a dramatic economic transformation from a depressed post-industrialized mill town into a bastion of tourism and high-tech commerce.
Today, the Church Street Marketplace is the centerpiece of Burlington's downtown district and was constructed in three phases - in 1981, 1994, and 2004. The Burlington Town Center (formerly the Burlington Square Mall) opened in 1978 and has been one of the only successful urban enclosed malls in the nation.
