AUSKF 2009 Iaido Nationals
One of the first matches of the highest level, the Nakanishi Cup (4th dan & up) of the taikai (competition) that took place on Saturday, June 20, in Boise, Idaho. On the left is David Bressler Sensei, 4th dan (of Ken Zen), and on the right is Tom Hooper Sensei, 6th dan (formerly of Ken Zen, now chief instructor of Sei-Zan Kai).
The kata Dave performed were: 1. Ipponme Mae, koryu 2. (I don't know the second kata, but it is also koryu) 3. Sanbome Ukenagashi, seitei 4. Nanahonme Sanpogiri, seitei 5. Ju Ipponme Souogiri, seitei For the non-iaido people, "koryu" are forms that are specific to the style (in this case, muso jikiden eishin ryu). "Seitei" are forms that are common to all iaido styles in a larger organization.
Dave won this match. A bit of an upset, in my very novice opinion.
Dave went on to face his sensei, Pam Parker, in the next round. (Sorry, I didn't record that match. But if I find it, maybe I'll post it later.)
