Do not plug your tap holes.! The tree will heal on its own, if you jam a stick in there you will introduce foreign bacteria into the tree and infect the tree, and the tree will have to work extra hard to heal the wound. Tap the Spiles or Spigots in gently so you don't split the tree fibers or cause damage to the tree.

If you cross cut a hardwood you will see two shades of color, Sapwood and Heartwood on the outside rings are the lighter color of Sapwood, its not very deep and that's were we get the flow of sap from, I've not noticed any difference in sap flow with a smaller hole and my taps not as far into the tree, maybe more with the shallow tap method, and the tree will thank you.
