After the "Windows XP on P1" movie I got some requests about running browsers like Chrome on a P1. Also questions about "Can I use my P1 to watch Facebook/Youtube/etc".
So here it is, the Pentium 1 browser test. Testing Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 10.2 (I thought it was 11, but it's 10.2....sorry), and Google Chrome.
The installing and preparing of the browsers alone was extremely frustrating because of the speed (lack of) of the machine, but after about 2 hours struggeling I got the 3 browsers running.
Testing each browser by trying to watch a Youtube movie (of my own channel ofc). The movie is in real-time, no fast forward or slomotion effects were added!
Don't want to bother watching 11 minutes of pure boredom?
Conclusion of the test is pretty simple, all 3 browsers run, all 3 browsers are too heavy for a P1 to deal with, and doing anything on the internet on a P1 is a complete disaster (unless you like slow machines and like to be frustrated :P ).
System requirements for each browser:
IE8: P1 233Mhz, 64MB ram, Winxp sp2
FF: P4 or Athlon with SSE2, 512MB, Winxp sp2/vista/7
Chrome: P4 or Athlon, 128MB, Winxp/vista/7
P1 166mmx @ 233Mhz (overclocked)
192MB SD RAM (64MB x3)
Super Socket 7 mainboard NMC 5VMC
TNT2 m64 32MB AGP graphic card
Windows XP service pack 3 (dutch, 32 bit version ofcourse)
Except for IE8, the system obviously doesn't meet the requirements.
Q: What is with the pulsing on the screen?
A: A problem with the camera trying to focus...it only showed afterwards.
Q: So...which of the browsers was the best?
A: Well they all had they problems, IE8 ran worst, was the slowest and most difficult to get running, Firefox was okay-ish but slow, Chrome was relative okay, but it's graphic effects are too heavy for this PC (the glass effect).
So, if you got a P1 and absolutly want to browse the internet on it, go for firefox or chrome, but leave IE8 behind.
Q: Why IE8 and not 9 or 10?
A: IE9 requires Vista or 7...
Q: Why is there no sound?
A: There isn't much to hear besides me sigh'ing and swearing, so I removed the audio.
