The principle behind this technology at present is thought to be a perpetual energy drive and as such is generally believed not to be possible. What this technology is actually doing is harnessing the geomagnetic energy created by the earth's rotation. This energy can be directly tapped into using magnets. Past attempts to build such devices failed largely because of friction and weight, as well as the Gates Effect. This is a near frictionless design in which the structure is enclosed in a vacuum chamber which provides zero air resistance. Further, the generator shaft is held in zero gravity suspension using magnets in a similar method employed in maglev trains.

It should also be noted that this is *NOT* a viable means commercial energy generation. Even with such extreme designs you would only be able to generate a small amount of energy and even then the neodymium magnets would start to give out within ten years of operation. It's more of a "proof of concept" than anything.
