"Together we will win this fight"
Arnold Schwarzenegger paid a visit to the European Commission today. The former Governor of California and founding Chair of the "R20 - Regions of Climate Action" had a meeting with President Barroso and Commissioner Oettinger before they attended the Covenant of Mayors.
At a press point after the meeting, President Barroso recalled that Mr Schwarzenegger is one of the pioneers of climate and energy action in the United States and praise his R20 initiative -- regions of climate action.
"It is good that you show the way and that together we remind everybody of our collective responsibility for the future of our fragile planet", President Barroso said to Mr Schwarzenegger.
President Barroso said that climate and energy action is at the heart of European policies and at the heart of the Europe 2020 strategy. Since 2007, the European Commission has strongly pushed European climate and energy action, through binding legislation and financial support.
In the face of devastating natural catastrophes around the globe, from floods in Europe to tornadoes in the United States, the President said that "people expect us to act".
He emphasised the economic benefits of climate action and its contribution to European jobs, innovation and competitiveness: "Green and growth can go together" in full agreement with Governor Schwarzenegger.
He outlined the different strands of EU action, including the on-going reform of the European Emissions Trading Systems, the completion of an internal energy market, the path towards a 2030 energy and climate framework and the commitment to achieve a binding global agreement by 2015.
Both underlined the importance of grass-roots-level action and showed their appreciation for the Covenant of Mayors, uniting the local level around ambitious climate and energy action.
