How to get to our lovely LGBTQQIAAP Center from the UCSC East Entrance!

The 'Merrill Recreation Building' has been a deeply meaningful personal and community sanctuary for the GLBTI campus community. Nearly 25 years ago, the 'Merrill Rec Building' was given to LGBT student leaders and was launched as a fledgling resource center. In 2003, the center was named in memoriam for Dr. Lionel Cantú; Dr. Cantú's family and a priest came to bless the space in Lionel's honor. During the expanse of 38 years, there have been thousands of GLBTI and allied students, staff, faculty, and alumni who have found safety and community within the Cantú Queer Center's walls. There have been countless gatherings, student organizational meetings, and cultural programs. Innumerable students have, for the first time, uttered the words "I am gay." "Or I am transgender." within the safe space of the 'Merrill Rec Building.' Alumni regularly return to the building to reminisce and visit their queer UCSC home.
