The Encyclopedia Britannica defines Jazz as "music played by a small ensemble featuring collective and solo improvisation"; the roots of the music are based in ragtime and blues melodies. The first jazz band to reach national recognition was called The Original Dixieland Jazz Band. The five original members were all from New Orleans. They played in Chicago and New York, and made the first publicly available recording. Although the group itself was unremarkable, the novelty of both the music and the medium through which it could be heard made the Dixieland name forever synonymous with Jazz in general. The melodies played in this arrangement are Royal Garden Blues, Mississippi Mud, and Back Home Again in Indiana.
