The Grey Heron Ardea cinerea feeds on fish, small mammals, amphibians, invertebrates and virtually anything else that it can catch! Armed with a fearsome bill, remarkable patience and excellent eyesight this large bird stealthily stalks its quarry before striking with great precision. When aiming at underwater prey an instant calculation is required to obtain the correct angle of strike as water has a different refractive index to air and there is also distortion of the prey item's image caused by waves and reflections from the water's surface.
