Are You My Mummy? Nerdy Costumes & Moving Stories. - From the Mind of McFarland video blog.

I must ask... Are you my mummy?

You never know what you're going to discover when moving. This past weekend earned the title Labor Day, as I moved from Woodfin (a north west "suburb" of Asheville) to West Asheville, which is the new "hip" neighborhood. Apparently until recently it was run down and very redneckish (if you visit the grocery store you'll definitely still see that element come out of the woodwork), but now it's full of awesome restaurants, bars, shops, and an awesome ice cream shoppe (why does it feel correct to spell it that way?) a few minutes walk from my house. In process of starting to unpack my mountain of boxes, emerged what is now one of my favorite moving stories: discovering my new gas mask!

This house is truly an oddity - it's a 1925 bungalow, which I'm sure was beautiful when built, that has had a myriad of very poorly thought through "renovations" performed on it over the years. Wall to wall carpeting on top of beautiful old hardwood. Random pressboard paneling all over the place. Paint on top of wallpaper. Acoustic tile ceilings in the kitchen, dining room and guest bedroom (which I believe was once a garage) with fluorescent lights in the ceiling. Doors that open the wrong direction everywhere.

I guess the previous owner was an old lady, which explains some of the bad decorating choices. What it doesn't explain is my moving story. Why, in the recesses of a high, corner cupboard in the kitchen, did I find my new gas mask? Why was it right next to a children's oxygen pump shaped like a seal, with a ninja turtle sticker on the mouthpiece?

All questions aside, though, I'm happy I discovered it - it solves the ever-important question of halloween costume ideas! I've always been one to tend towards nerdy costumes or obscure costumes. I'm only a recent Doctor Who fan, so without having discovered the mask it's unlikely that I would have gone the direction of Dr Who costumes for Halloween, but now that I've found the gas mask, the halloween problem is solved! All I need to do is find a shabby old suit and learn to say,

"Are you my mummy?"
