A staple of Jewish cuisine, a well-made bagel is a wonderful thing. If you are lucky enough to live near a proper bagel bakery, you'll be able to get good ones. I can't recommend the bagels from my local supermarket though. But you can make your own bagels - it's good fun and the results make it worthwhile, but I won't pretend it's easy for a beginner.
One very unusual thing about bagels is that they are poached in simmering water before being baked - this adds the distinctive chewiness to the texture of the bagels.
