This video shows how I taught Kili, my Senegal Parrot, to do the ring on peg trick by color. So not only does Kili put the ring on the peg (which is the mechanical part of the trick) but she also picks the correct peg by matching the color of the ring to the color of the peg. One smart Senegal Parrot!
First, the Senegal Parrot puts 4 rings on their respective pegs by color (orange, pink, blue, and purple). The I have her fly to pick up each ring off the floor, fly onto the table, and then coordinate the color of the ring to the correct peg. I go through the flighted ring on peg trick twice in full to show that she really knows the trick. The first time through is cut up to save time but by the end of the session she was doing the trick so well and promptly that I left the last run through the trick completely uncut so that you could see that she really does the trick for real (no fancy cut/splicing, etc). Also, I tried to give her the rings in a random order and the pegs are lined in random order for each trick to demonstrate that she really knows the colors rather than just remembering the order to put the rings on or something.
Teaching the tricks is relatively simple but requires a lot of time and patience. I wrote about how to teach the ring on peg trick to parrots on my parrot forum here:
