The 4th game of the famous 40+ point streak in the 2002-03 season.

Kobe was on fire, scoring 7 straight 35+ point games and scoring 3 straight 40+ point games. But his next game would be a real challenge for his team and his streak. The Spurs won 7 straight games, all which were road games. Also they had arguably the best defensive player in the league, Bruce Bowen.

All of that didn't matter to Kobe. Riding the hot streak, he came out the first quarter with a vengaence. He made 5 of his first 8 helping LA to a 22-21 lead. Then, he exploded in the 2nd quarter. He started the quarter with a fadeaway, then went on to make 5 straight jumpshots against the championship defense of the San Antonio Spurs. He went on to score 24 first half points, showing his greatness and abilities at the age of 24. Then the defense started to tighten up on him and the Spurs sent doubles on Kobe every time he got the ball. Lethargic play by the LA Lakers led to the game slipping away and the Spurs held a commanding 11 point lead with a minute to go. Despite the game being a longshot away from a victory, Bryant earned his 42nd point with a three over the Spurs with 54 seconds to go, then hit another jumpshot to bring his total to 44. However, LA had a very disappointing loss against the Spurs led by Tim Duncan who put up 28 points and 20 rebounds.

Kobe Bryant's statline for the game was 44 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks on 19-41 shooting.
