Virginia Zeani was one of the first sopranos to sing all three principal roles on one night in "The Tales of Hoffmann" and first did so in a celebrated production at La Scala Milan. Three different "voices" are needed, coloratura soprano, lyric soprano and lyrico spinto soprano, Here she portrays Giulietta, a voluptuous Venetian courtesan. The scene is the Grand Canal. Giulietta is joined in a gondola by a young man, Niklausse, a travesty role for mezzo soprano, and together they sing the famous Barcarolle. The photographs show Virginia Zeani with her husband Nicola Rossi Lemeni as the evil sorcerer Dapertutto, one of the four roles he portrayed in the same La Scala production. The very peculiar live recording, possibly made over the tannoy system or in a props box in the wings, is from the Grand Theatre Geneve in 1966.

Poor those recordings are, I am posting them for the sake of completeness.
