An Odd Couple at The Art Workers Guild

Richard Jacobs is a deceptively winsome and rather ancient retired Californian university professor with a subversive bent. He is also a writer and long time collector of pottery. Gareth Mason is an internationally recognised British potter with his own healthy disrespect for orthodoxy. Both share a love of words and fired clay.

This unlikely pair exchanged two mighty letters in 2011/2012 (now published in the book, 'More is More') and subsequently distilled their writings into a unique 'two-hander' performance that flies in the face of conventional 'lecturing'. Delivered in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New York and now London, this dramatic event addresses head-on the very essence of what it is to live an engaged and creative life. This is provocative stuff – they don't pull their punches – and their knock-about exchange will entertain and bamboozle in equal measure.

Their material is personal and occasionally blunt; hard-lived and unerringly honest. If you are a lover of art and words, you will be rewarded here by a substantial debate on creativity and philosophy that is entirely free of 'Art Speak' and pretension, and probably quite unlike anything you may have seen before...

Caution for two instances of strong language.

Recorded at the Art Workers Guild, London, May 29th 2014.
