Four-time Bathurst winner has until late this afternoon to decide if he will start this weekend's L&H 500 at Phillip Island.

The V8 Supercar star injured his back three weeks ago - but he rates his chances at 80% of making the starting grid.

Castrol EDGE Racing's Greg Murphy is one of the tough men in V8 Supercar Racing. But a slipped a disc in his lower back required surgery three weeks ago. After rating himself 50/50 - things have improved to 80%, but he still has some doubt over whether he can race this weekend.

Waiting in the wings is Daniel Gaunt, who became available after he lost his ride after losing his ride with the Gulf Western Oil Team.

The Friday practice sessions give Murphy the opportunity to fully test his fitness.

As crews prepared for the weekend's racing activities, Toll Holden Racing Team's Cameron McConville took notice of a number of circuit improvements - including a new line of tyre barriers at the exit of turn 1 following his 250km collision with Steve Owen last year.

Bottle O Racing's Paul Dumbrell is preparing for two races. This weekend's 500km V8 enduro and a marathon triathlon later in the year in Mexico. He is set to be the true iron man this weekend with plenty of kilometres covered.
