the second in a series of three ambient piano improvisations, I found myself creating a new piece of music over the course of this recording session, and in the end, I made nine takes of the track as it slowly grew from idea, to something approaching a "composed improv" - if such a thing can even be. this is the track as it was at take 8 - a surprising amount of development having taken place from the much shorter and less well developed fourth take (part 1 of the series).

I approached this originally in the same way I would any improvisation - I sit down at the piano, and, I begin playing. I chose an A note, and built a two note melody over two chords - and it just grew from that, really. I don't really know where these kinds of songs come from, but I've been playing improvisations on the piano like this, (off and on) for all of my adult life and through a good part of my childhood, too. This time, I could feel the piece maturing right under my fingers, the arpeggios are much more articulate, there are some incredibly quick passages, too, which is unusual for me - I don't see myself as a "fast player" on either piano or guitar - but sometimes...it just happens, and if I am very lucky - as I was here - those quick arpeggios and slides really liven up the middle section of the piece.

In later years, I gave this practice a name, calling it "dream piano", and this piece clearly falls into that category. it's simply an imagined melody, with imagined chords, and then there are wholly improvised "bridge" sections, not to mention the occasional arpeggio or two - in this case, quite a few arpeggios - and then, to try to bring things full circle, I repeat some of the simplest of the melodic inventions that I began with. the slow, quiet ending has become "standard" at this point.

That's how it happens for me, I know every musician is different, but the interesting thing here is, that by playing "the same" (and no two are even really remotely the same, but I am sticking with this theme here) improv over and over and over...it begins to have form, it begins to take on some of, but not all, of the characteristics of a "song".

what I've done with this series, is that I have selected the three improvs that I think best represent this musical idea, and I will be uploading videos for each of the three parts in sequence. those happened to be, on the day - take four, take eight, and take nine of nine total. at this point, the song is very nearly "as developed" as it is going to get, and while I originally felt that take nine was the final form of this improv - now I am not so sure - in some ways, I almost think that this take, take 8 may be the "definitive" version. I will leave that decision to the listeners, since I can't really tell.

this is take eight, and it's quite expanded compared to the more primitive take four, it's really come a long way in a very short time, and I think it's a great representation of a "developed" improv - which is maybe a new kind of art form - songs "composed" by playing an improv over and over until it takes a proper form. this is very nearly that - it's very much the end result I would have wanted. yet, an hour before this, it didn't exist in any form at all.

this is the second of three examples to be posted, please stay tuned for the final take.

"theme for an imaginary drama - part II" was recorded live to digital on March 29, 2017 using an IPhone6Plus for video and my usual recording rig (SONAR) for audio. this is the second time I've shot video with the iPhone, and I could not resist the chance to use the "fish eye" lens for this series of videos.
