The senior youth group, Emerge, from Lebanon First United Methodist Church with the Missouri Conference participated in a work camp June 25-30 in the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. The group included: Pastor Barbra McKenzie, Bob Childers, Eric Adams, Dale Cook, Kelsey Lester, Matt Lambeth, Zack Rogers, Skylar Cobleigh, Clairessa Ridenhour and Shane Cobleigh.
"We could feel God's protection," said Lester. "No one was hurt even when we uncovered six large red wasp nests. They were flying around us everywhere."
The Emerge mission trip helped the family of Johnny Backwater from Kenwood, Okla. Thanks to the help from Bob Childers, the Lebanon group was able to rebuild a back porch, re-roofed a sunroom and replaced doors. Afternoons were spent cooling off in a spring-fed creek, which also served as the community-bathing hole. Cultural activities included visiting the Cherokee Heritage Center in Tahlaquah, participating in a Wednesday-night worship service, playing stickball, eating fried hog, and dancing at the ceremonial stomping grounds.
