The Richard Burns Foundation was created following the death of Richard Burns, the 2001 World Rally Champion, from an astrocytoma -- a virulent form of brain tumour -- in November 2005.
The foundation will be present in Brescia, at Rally 1000 Miglia, at the second round of the European Rally Championship, from 19 to 21 April 2012.
Richard's strength and determination throughout his illness were an inspiration to those who knew and worked with him. He faced his disease with the same attitude that he displayed on the world's rally stages: showing bravery, intelligence and single-mindedness. These were all the qualities that helped make him England's only World Rally Champion.
After Richard's death, which occurred when he was aged just 34, the Richard Burns Foundation was set up by some of his closest friends and colleagues as a lasting tribute to his memory. It aims to help people who are affected by serious illness or injury.
During the Rally 1000 Miglia, a "Richard Burns Award" will be given to the driver that will demonstrate to have the qualities of Richard, being considered and consistent.
For the duration of the Rally, a special zone will be created in the service park, with two "Richard Burns Rally" game driving simulators available where all the public can join and race, challenging in a virtual rally.
An online rally will be created where everyone can join and remember Richard, this is thanks to the help of RBR-World, the Italian community about online racing. People from all over the world can remember Richard just by installing the RBR-World plugin, free downloadable at www.rbr-world.com. This rally will be an "open time" rally, so from Thursday 19th April at 18:00 to Saturday 21th April at 18:00 each "online driver" can try to have the best times.
A replica of the Subaru in which Richard Burns won the title in 2001 will also be on show in the Service Park for all the fans to see and enjoy.
All the money collected during the event will be donated to "La Colonna -- Associazione Lesioni Spinali", an Italian association focused onto the dissemination and the promotion of research on spinal cord injuries.
Thanks the help of everyone, the Foundation aims to change a lives for the better.
Let's see in Rally 1000 Miglia!
