Dyslexia: Discovering and Tapping into the Potential

Content: The specific reading disorder known as dyslexia is the most significant category of learning disabilities. It affects students' academic performance and is often frustrating for the students, their parents and teachers because these students possess an exceptional capacity to use their brains in order to alter and create perceptions. With appropriate educational intervention, teachers can assist by stimulating their extra ordinary creative abilities. This webinar examines the basics of dyslexia and suggests supporting intervention strategies that educators and parents can utilize to enhance the talents and creativity of these students.

Presenter: Naseem Smith is a teacher with over 20 years experience in the field of special educational needs. She has taught students with exceptionalities and currently heads a public school for students with special educational needs on the island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. She has also lectured teachers in training on aspects of special education and conducted seminars across the Caribbean region and Central America. Naseem is currently pursuing her PhD at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill campus.

Audience: Teachers, Ministries of Education, teacher education institutions, teacher organizations, leaders of civil society organizations, and those interested in learning the best strategies for teaching English to Spanish-speaking students.
