Spin the Monkey

We had just arrived in Ubud and were walking back to our bungalow with bags of groceries. We had to walk past the entrance of the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary.

The walls are for the people, not the monkeys. The Balinese Long-tailed monkeys have lookouts, they scheme and coordinate. They know what is inside grocery bags.

This one monkey comes out of nowhere and jumps up on to Hillary and starts to tear the grocery bags. It worked fast. The bags tore open and food started falling everywhere. Hillary didn’t scream. She didn’t run. She didn’t try to fight the monkey.

She started spinning.

For the monkey, this was not a problem. It just held on like Hillary was a tree branch swaying in the wind.

Eventually, one of the workers from the sanctuary came to our aid. We picked up our groceries. Everything was there…except for the butter. Some little monkey is fattening up in the forest.

Don’t walk past the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary with groceries or any monkey forest for that matter. Spinning may not be best course of action if a monkey jumps on you, but, it sure is funny.
