NAME: Steven Read
SCHOOL: Central
CITY: Brooksville
40 TIME: 4.45(Reported)
HEAD COACH: Cliff Lohrey
SCOUTING READ: The true mark of a solid receiver is measured on speed, athletic ability, route running and the ability to make plays when your team needs to you to step up. This is a young player who has certainly answered all the questions that have asked of him in his young career. Here is a football talent who can lineup on both sides of the ball and still give his team that pure athlete they are searching for.Anytime someone asks is 4.4 or 4.5 is fast enough to excel at the collegiate level? The answer, especially in Reads case is yes. Here is someone who knows the game so well, he uses his quickness as an advantage that many dont have at this level of their young career.Focusing in on his pass-catching skills, theres little doubt that he can run just about any pattern asked of him. Short ins, short outs, intermediate routes across the middle or to the outside, he has the skill level and toughness to make a play.
His concentration is uncanny for a young man his age. Very rarely takes his head off the ball, and when you think of all the things that he has to worry about, that is quite impressive, and college coaches who cover the region have told us the same things about him.As a kick returner, you would expect much of the same, and you get it. He follows blocks, has the speed and knowledge to follow the wedge right up the field. This is truly an athlete who has impressed and gained attention by the things he does - well! On defense, here is the ultimate centerfielder, who reads the play from the beginning and is not afraid to put his head in and make a play. He also knows exactly where the ball is headed, which is one of those perks of playing on both sides of the field. The one thing defensively that many have not picked up about read is his leaping ability. That was the first thing we watched when seeing him on the defensive side of the ball. He has a knack of getting to the ball at its highest point, and for him that is close to 35 inches high. Its a tremendous advantage to have that kind of jumping skills.READ ROLLS: In addition to his skills on the football field, Read is also a member of the track team for the Bears, where he competes in the 100 and 200 meters as well as the long jump. He is also a member of the basketball team.
WHAT THE COLLEGE RECRUITERS ARE SAYING: "You know, the first time I watched him play, I wasn't totally sold. But I went back and was truly surprised by what I watched. This is a young man who has a very nice future."
HIS BAGS ARE PACKED: While it's early on, several schools in the spring and throughout the summer wrote his name for future reference, which many have been using so far this season.
