Today the Chinese regime passed a new set of laws legalizing the removal of online messages and registering the identities of Web users.

Internet providers of both mobile and computer platforms will now need to collect their customer's true identities. This is already in place for most fixed internet contracts but only about 70% of mobile-based agreements.

Providers are also asked to delete posts that are deemed, "illegal". They must also keep a log of those posts, and report it to authorities. This is already being done by China's internet police, but the new laws now create a legal obligation on service providers too.

State-run media report the new measures will further stop online rumors and protect people's identity. But many think it's just another step to limit free speech.

A recent wave of online postings has exposed scandals involving Chinese officials. Several have been sacked, or forced to resign because of these embarrassing leaks.

The new internet regulations suggest that while China's new leaders have promised reform, it may be a kind of reform that observers were not expecting.
