Misla Barco, who teaches Spanish at East Palo Alto Academy, a charter school operated by Stanford's School of Education was honored recently. During Teacher Appreciation Week in May, she received a phone call from Arne Duncan, U.S. secretary of education. Barco was one of four teachers around the country Duncan personally called to thank for their work. East Palo Alto Academy opened in 2001 as a joint project of Stanford, a Bay Area nonprofit organization and the Ravenswood School District. The school is located in East Palo Alto, Calif., near Stanford.
