Presented at Signs of Change National e-Conference, 15-16 November 2010, NEW ZEALAND

Solar water heating received its first boost in the 1970s when the OPEC oil embargoes brought the
importance of energy to our attention. After burst of activity that lasted through to the mid 1980s
interest faded and by the mid 1990s solar water heating was of very minor commercial interest. The
industry began to grow again in the 2000s and over the last 10 years there has become available a
wide range of collector types arising from European developments and especially the meteoric
growth of the "evacuated tube" industry in China.
A brief history of the NZ industry will background a discussion of characteristics of various kinds of
collectors with particular reference to their use in New Zealand.
