The cross-media-opera "C -- the speed of light" opened the "Summer of Science" in the official "Year of Einstein 2005". The German government and the national science association "Wissenschaft im Dialog" mandated phase7 with the composition and realization of a modern Einstein-Opera. In honour of Albert Einstein the opera was to be situated on a prominent and history-charged place: the famous Bebelplatz in the heart of Berlin. This is where the book burnings of the Nazis were held.

phase7 focused on Einstein's world of imagination and the medium "light" as one of the main sources of inspiration. Soon phase7 decided that a special stage had to be found for this special event:
a giant MultimediaDome of 18 meters height.

The cupola-shaped 360°- projection -- perspective opened up a completely new theatre experience for the audience and enabled the integration of original scientific visual material. International Science institutions (such as NASA/ESA, Hubble Space Telescope, Max-Planck, Center for Computation Technology at Louisiana, Zuse Institute) from all over the world started collaborating with phase7 to leverage this ambitious project. Video- and multimedia - artists used the impressively big dome surface for a picture intoxication from projections. Permanently changing light scenarios were created with the use of latest media techniques. The relation between time and space seemed to dissolve.

The attractive external effect of the innovative stage area functioned as self-advertisement and enabled a founded integration of media.

The enormous projection dome holds 270 people (seated). The premiere of C -- the speed of light was presented to media representatives and invited VIPs on 10th of June 2005. On 11th of June the Dome opened up for public audience. In the following two weeks the illuminated dome attracted with daily performances up to 10.000 guests into the striking and exceptional venue. Erected at a prominent place -- aside the famous road "Unter den Linden" - the sphere turned into the most interesting eye-catcher of the capital.
